MED 703 - Teaching and Learning K-12 Mathematics

Teacher Preparation & Professional Enhancement
Focus on Grades 5 through 9 Transitions

Tuesday, 16 September 2008
(1.1) Review of teacher preparation programs. Each person reviews 2 states in the U.S. and one foreign country.
Questions to address - keep in mind to address these across a school transition. For example, in some places there is teacher credentialing for grades K-6 and separate credentialing for grades 7-12. In this example, one would consider how the three questions are answered on each side of the transition from grade 6 to grade 7.
(a) What does the government entity (e.g., state board of education) say a person needs to know and do to be credentialed (certified, licensed) teacher?
(b) What does the primary university for the preparation of teachers in the state offer in its teacher preparation programs?
(c)
NOTE: Create bulleted/organized information and/or handouts, performances, slide shows (max. 5 minutes) for sharing information you have found with classmates; also share through the Blackboard discussion board on teacher preparation. Name a thread by Locale-YourName (e.g., Kentucky-Hauk).
(1.2) In-class review of some of the history of mathematics education policy in the United States.

(1.3) HOMEWORK: Read the selection chosen in class, see Blackboard - Discussion Board - Teacher Preparation Forum for links to articles.

(6.1) In-class viewing and discussion of IMAP videos.
  1. (30 minutes): View video Number 13.
In discussing the video, address the following prompts:
    1. What stood out for you in this video clip? Did what stood out for you confirm or challenge any of your beliefs about mathematics teaching or learning? How?
    2. You have not seen Rachel's teacher teach, but you have heard her talk a little about her craft.
      • What do you think about the way Rachel's teacher thinks about teaching?
      • What understanding of mathematics would a teacher need to be able to teach in the manner reflected in Rachel's teacher's comments?
      • If the way Rachel's teacher talks about teaching reflects her practice, would you like to teach that way? Why or why not?
  2. (45 minutes): View IMPAP videos 14 and 15.
Based on the videos, develop reflection/discussion questions that focus on teacher preparation. Have someone post the questions on Blackboard.

HOMEWORK: Catch up on reading/annotated bib writing.
