Department of Mathematical Sciences

Name: Steve Leth
Professor of Mathematical Sciences

Education:
Ph.D. Mathematics, University of Colorado (1985)
M.S. Mathematics, Stanford University (1978)
B.A. Mathematics and Physics, University of Colorado (1976)

 Classes:
I have taught many classes at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Courses that I have taught frequently include

Teaching Philosophy:
Give students hard, interesting problems to work on, and then give them lots of help

Experience:
1988-present University of Northern Colorado Greeley, CO
1985-1988 Van Vleck Assistant Professor, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI

 Research and Publications:
My research is in the area of nonstandard analysis, which could be described as a method for applying concepts from logic to other branches of mathematics. I have published several papers in which this method is used to obtain results in such areas as combinatorial number theory and geometric topology. I am also interested in methods of teaching mathematics, and have given a number of talks about calculus reform, writing in mathematics classes and ways to enrich the mathematical curriculum at the elementary and middle school levels. I would be happy to share reprints of papers or discuss any of these issues, mathematical or educational with anyone who is interested.

Personal Information: On a personal note, I have three children all in college.   Interests outside of  academia include dancing  (country, swing, latin, argentine tango), volleyball and hiking in the mountains.

The following are links to other sites: Anyone interested in mathematics should check out the sites for the MAA and the AMS. Those interested in the teaching of mathematics at any level should look at the NCTM home page.   Mathworld contains extensive information about all branches of mathematics.  Cut-the-knot contains a wide variety of interactive mathematics and puzzles.  And finally, a wonderful interactive site about fractals (make sure to try "fractalina" and the "chaos game"): http://math.bu.edu/DYSYS/.

Most recent research paper:

Near Arithmetic Progressions in Sparse Sets  (to appear in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society).
