This Program prepares students to teach such Mathematics as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, trigonometry, and mathematical analysis at the secondary school level (grades 7-12).

Students entering this program are expected to have the equivalent of four years of high school mathematics through trigonometry that will enable them to begin a study of calculus; students without these prerequisites may be required to take additional courses in algebra and trigonometry before beginning the calculus sequence.

This emphasis is for those planning to teach mathematics at the high school level. The Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) has three courses (STEP 161, STEP 262 and STEP 363) that are based off campus within a Partnership High School. These will require at least two hours per week working in the Partnership School for each week of the semester that you are enrolled in each course. You will need to schedule your time efficiently during these semesters. STEP 161 should be taken during your sophomore year or the second semester of your freshman year at the earliest. You are encouraged to have a semester totally on campus after STEP 161 and STEP 262(i.e. you are encouraged to not take the off-campus course during consecutive semesters.)

Students in this emphasis are also encourage to gain experience tutoring other students in our departmental tutoring center. This can be done for credit by signing up for MED 272.
